The Bible is not silent about the value of life before birth. Calling it silent on abortion does not make its teaching about unborn children disappear.
At a CNN town hall, Democrat James Talarico argued that the Bible is silent on abortion. I believe that argument misses the central issue: Who creates life, and who gives us authority to destroy it?
Jeremiah 1:5 records God telling Jeremiah that He knew him before forming him in the womb. His calling preceded his birth.
In Psalm 139:13–16, David describes God knitting him together in his mother's womb, seeing his unformed body, and knowing his days before they unfolded.
That is personal knowledge and deliberate creation. The child hidden from our eyes is never hidden from God's.
Ephesians 1:3–4 tells believers they were chosen in Christ before creation. Ephesians 2:10 says we are God's handiwork, created in Christ for good works prepared in advance.
Those passages concern God's purposes for His people. They are not abortion statutes. But pretending Scripture has nothing meaningful to say about unborn life ignores what those passages reveal about our Creator.
My conviction is straightforward: Life belongs to God. We do not have the moral authority to end an unborn child's life because that child is unwanted.
But defending that truth gives us no permission to behave without love.
A frightened mother needs help. Someone carrying regret from an abortion needs to hear that repentance, forgiveness, and restoration are available through Jesus Christ.
We can oppose abortion without humiliating people. We can defend children while extending mercy to their mothers. Faithfulness requires both.
Speak clearly. Love patiently. Offer help that costs you something. God's truth and God's mercy belong together.
How can Christians defend unborn children while making God's love unmistakable to mothers facing fear, pressure, or regret?
