The demon that only the Pope could cast out

In the memoirs of the Church’s great exorcists, there are episodes that impressively reveal the strength of the Successor of Peter’s prayer against the forces of evil. One of the most striking cases is that of Charles, a French nobleman delivered by Pope Benedict XVI.

The story, recorded in the book *Profession: Exorcist* by Father Cesare Truqui and journalist Chiara Santomiero, recounts how a successful and happily married man began to suffer inexplicable trances following a spiritual retreat. After ruling out any medical or psychiatric cause, it was confirmed to be a genuine case of possession.

During the intense rituals led by exorcist Francesco Bamonte, the voice emanating from the possessed man arrogantly identified itself as "the prince of this world," asserting that the priest had no power over him and that only a bishop or the Pope could expel him.

Faced with the young man's suffering and the toll of the spiritual battle, a letter was sent directly to the Holy Father through the Secretariat of State. A week later, Pope Ratzinger's response confirmed that he would offer his Mass intentions and personal prayers for Charles's deliverance.

Three months later, in an extraordinary manner and following a powerful papal prayer, Charles was completely freed from the evil one. The origin of the evil was later discovered: during his childhood, his parents had made a demonic pact, handing the young boy over in exchange for wealth and power.

This testimony not only demonstrates the reality of evil as described in the Gospels, but also reaffirms the immense value of faith, the spiritual authority of the Church, and the invincible power of trusting prayer.
