"Conservative" institutions are supporting the homosexual activist James Martin SJ.
Two Catholic groups - the substack.com account 'The Pillar' and the Napa Institute - have given public prominence to pro-homosexual James Martin.
On 12 October, JD Flynn of 'The Pillar' published a 96-minute interview with Martin. He claimed that practising homosexuals (who "do whatever") are "treated like dirt" when they are told not to receive Holy Communion.
Martin accused priests and other Catholics of mistreating homosexuals, whom he portrayed as victims of even physical violence. Flynn did not challenge these unsubstantiated allegations.
The following day, Martin took part in the Napa Institute's annual Eucharistic procession through Midtown Manhattan, starting at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Founded in 2010 by businessman Timothy Busch and Jesuit Father Robert Spitzer, the California-based Napa Institute attracts conservative Catholic bishops and wealthy donors. Its flagship event, the annual Summer Conference in Napa Valley, attracted over 700 participants, including more than 15 bishops, in July 2026. Prominent prelates associated with the institute include Archbishops Paul Coakley, Salvatore Cordileone and Timothy Broglio, as well as Bishop Thomas Paprocki, all of whom hold or have held positions on its ecclesiastical advisory bodies. Coakley, who is currently president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, serves as the institute's ecclesiastical adviser, while Mike Warsaw, chairman and CEO of EWTN, sits on its board of directors.
