Prof. Massimo Viglione:
Leone XIV and the Sovereign People
A pope who lets the entire world know that he votes in the elections of his own country—something no one had ever done before, not even Bergoglio—not only is clearly engaging in electoral advertising, being absolutely certain for everyone who he does not vote for (Trump), but is actually carrying out an operation infinitely more destructive and subversive than that which is specifically political.
And it is the clear and manifest intent to reduce the figure of the Pope to a man of the world like any other, who, like any other, engages in democratic and liberal political activity.
In other words, he does what Peter (“You are Peter”) should not, could not, and should never wish to do.
Therefore, even in a case of apparently secondary importance like this one, the truth is that the importance is anything but secondary, since what is at stake is the very figure of the Pope, and thus the role of the Papacy in the history of the Church and the world.
And, consequently, the fatal question arises once again: can Peter engage in electoral propaganda and show himself to be a dutiful citizen of a State? In this way, is he not failing in the catholicity (in the sense of universality) of his role? Stated even better: is he not lowering the papacy to the service of a secular State and statist civic education?
Stated even better still: can a pope disfigure, devalue, reduce to the pathetic, humanize in such a manner what is not only human, and which exists only and precisely because of its divine nature as well as human?
Can he place Peter himself—that is, the Church—at the service of the State?
And if he cannot, why does he do it?
And if he does it, and, above all, communicates it to the entire world so that everyone knows, what exactly does he intend to transmit to us, given that Peter no longer belongs to any State other than the Catholic Church (and therefore the Holy See)? And what conclusions must we draw from it, if Peter still feels like a citizen of a State and therefore not Peter?
Are you sure that the matter can be resolved trivially as any papal defender at any cost would do, and that it is not instead necessary to draw the consequence that once again the Papacy is being demolished—and therefore the Catholic Church as an institution that is first and foremost divine, and only thereafter human?
After all, in France did he not celebrate the “grandeur” of liberté, égalité et fraternité?
