Fighting Opposition: Today, Pope Francis will open the new academic year at the John Paul II Pontifical Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. Originally, Cardinal Robert Sarah should have inaugurated the year, but Francis imposed himself for this task. He will, however, not visit the Institute, but will receive its members in the Vatican. Concrete doctrinal implications: On October 31, Pope Francis will travel to Lund, Sweden, in order to – quote – “give thanks for the specific gifts of the Protestant Reformation,” according to Cardinal Kurt Koch who is in charge of Ecumenism in the Vatican.
