The Christian should not allow himself to be impressed, when recalling the value and sanctity of marriage, by the difficulties or even by the mockery that he may encounter in the environment, just as the Lord did not mind that the existing climate among the people of Israel was contrary to his teachings. By defending the indissolubility of the institution of marriage, we do an immense good to all.
Jesus Christ, in opposition to the atmosphere of that time regarding the institution of marriage, restores to it all its original dignity and elevates it to the supernatural order, by instituting marriage as one of the seven sacraments that were to sanctify the spouses and family life. And today, when in so many circles people attack the dignity of this sacrament and its essential properties, or try to ridicule it with crude parodies, it is the duty of Christians, as Jesus did in his time, to defend it and lay the foundations so that the family, united and solid, may be the foundation of society itself.
The family "must be the object of attention and support on the part of all those involved in public life. Educators, writers, politicians and legislators must take into account that a large part of social and even personal problems have their roots in the failures or shortcomings of family life.
To fight against juvenile delinquency or the prostitution of women while at the same time favoring the discrediting or deterioration of the institution of the family is a lightness and a contradiction.
"The good of the family in all its aspects must be one of the fundamental concerns of Christian action in public life. The various sectors of social life must support marriage and the family, providing them with all those economic, social, educational, political and cultural aids which are urgently needed today so that they can continue to carry out their irreplaceable functions in our society (cf. Familiaris consortio, n. 45).
"It should be noted, however, that the role of families in social and political life cannot be merely passive. They themselves must be 'the first to see to it that the laws not only do not offend, but also support and positively defend the rights and duties of the family' (Ibidem, n. 44), thus promoting a true 'family policy' (Ibidem) "8.
The exemplarity and joy of Christian spouses must precede their apostolate with their children and with other families whom they treat for reasons of friendship, social relations, common objectives in the education of their children, etc.
This joy, in the midst of the normal difficulties of every family, is born of a holy life, of correspondence to the marital vocation. And the children, following their own vocation, do a very pleasing good to the Lord when they strive to do everything in their power to maintain the atmosphere proper to a Christian family in which all live the human and supernatural virtues: joy, cordiality, sobriety, industriousness, mutual respect....
