A waterspout, which is a column of rotating, cloud-filled wind, tore through the sea near Rome in the night to December 10. It lasted for about 15 minutes.
The bizarre and very rare phenomenon is sometimes seen in the late summer and autumn but these 'tornados' collapse soon after they move onto the shore.
