Highlights

Excess mortality in the EU fell sharply in January 2023, compared with the previous month, at 2.7 %.

In January 2023, excess mortality continued to vary across the EU. Eight EU member States (Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Lithuania) recorded no excess deaths while the most affected EU country, Luxembourg, recorded an excess mortality rate of 15.7 %.

Between March 2020 and January 2023, the EU recorded four distinct waves of excess mortality, with peaks in April 2020 (25.2 %), November 2020 (40.0 %, the highest), April 2021 (20.9 %) and November 2021 (26.5 %).
