Leo XIV appointed on November 26 the Indian Carmelite Fr Joshy George
Pottackal, 48, as Auxiliary Bishop of Mainz, Germany. He will be
ordained a Bishop on March 15.
Monsignor Pottackal was born in
the southern Indian state of Kerala. He became a German citizen in 2014,
after living in Germany for ten years.
On March 2, he told the
Substack.com-Account 'The Pillar' that his appointment can be seen as a
stance against the alleged "growing racism" and "xenophobia in Germany":
"Immigration is a part of Germany, and therefore immigrants are a
natural part of all areas of society."
Furthermore, he presented himself as an opponent of the Apostolic liturgy, faith and morals.
"I like that priests in Germany have more freedom to add personal and individual touches to church services."
He did not participate in the heretical German synod: "I have been following it closely over the years."
His opinion: "I think it is a positive that the synodal way led to quicker reforms and brought about a change in attitudes."
The German Synod called for female and transgender priests, as well as "blessings" for homosexuals.
For
Monsignor Pottackal, maintaining the synodal conference is crucial
against the backdrop of continuing challenges. However, this
"conference" is a national body empowered to dominate the individual
diocesan bishop.
