The Polish priest Beniamin Sęktas (ordained in 2020) from the Diocese of Drohiczyn in eastern Poland publicly called for the resignation of Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś, 62, of Krakow.
Leo XIV had promoted the pro-homosexual Cardinal Ryś from Łódź to Krakow in November 2025.
In an open letter published in mid-December 2025, Rev. Sęktas asked the Cardinal to resign. He called Cardinal Ryś a “public collaborator of rainbow Catholics.”
Furthermore, Rev. Sęktas noted that Cardinal Ryś promotes extraordinary lay ministers to distribute Communion.
The letter included statements such as:
“You continue to shock and scandalize many Catholics”
“the cynical face of an activist seeking the applause of opinion-forming elites”
Bishop Henryk Sawczuk of Drohiczyn summoned Rev. Sęktas and reprimanded him. On May 4, the Diocese of Drohiczyn published a statement saying that the priest had violated the media guidelines adopted by the Polish Bishops’ Conference in 2023.
The bishop also forbade him from publishing similar content in the future.
Several Catholic media outlets in Poland described the public disciplinary response against Rev. Sęktas as unusually strong.
