Vatican `rebukes´ Argentine Bishops
The two are Archbishop Marcelo Colombo, 65, of Mendoza, and Bishop Gabriel Barba, 62, of San Luis. Both have restricted Catholics from receiving Communion kneeling and on the tongue.
The Vatican reaffirmed that the faithful are free to receive Communion according to the forms permitted by the Church.
Archbishop Colombo is the president of the Argentine Bishops’ Conference. In September 2024, he declared that “in Argentina, Communion is received standing.”
Bishop Barba requires extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist to receive Communion in the hand.
There will likely be no sanctions against the bishops beyond the Vatican's empty words meant to placate Catholics.
