St. John Bosco: teachings on the Holy Eucharist

.

Make your Communions as they should be made. There are some who approach Holy Communion without thinking of correcting their faults: they receive Communion in the morning, and during the day, they occasionally have inappropriate conversations with their companions. They gossip about this or that, about their superiors, about their peers... How can it be said that they have made a good Communion? (VIII, 55).

189. After Communion, spend at least a quarter of an hour in thanksgiving. It would be a most grave irreverence if, only a few minutes after having received the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, one were to leave the Church. (III, 162).

190. Do you want to know my desire? Receive Communion daily. The Council of Trent says: "Sacramentaliter" (Sacramentally). So? Then do it that way. When you cannot receive Communion sacramentally, at least receive Communion spiritually. (VII, 578).

191. How many children there are who do not listen to religious instruction or the explanations of God's holy law! Prepare them to receive the Holy Sacraments frequently... Ah! "Parvuli petierunt panem, et non erat qui frangeret eis" (The little ones begged for bread, and there was no one to break it for them). (Tr. IV, 4). (II, 308-309).

192. Show me a young man who frequents Confession and Communion; you will see him flourish in his youth, reach manhood, and attain, if it so pleases God, a most advanced age, with a conduct that will be an example to all who know him. (VI, 145).

193. Whoever does not approach Communion with a detachment from worldly affections, and does not throw themselves unconditionally into the arms of Jesus, will not be able to draw the fruits that are theologically known to be the effects of Communion. (XI, 278).

194. Some say that to receive Communion, it is necessary to be a saint. That is not true! This is an error! Communion is for those who want to become saints, not for those who are already saints. Medicine is given to the sick, and food to the weak.

195. Communion is food that provides life and strength. (IX, 709).

196. The foundation of a young person’s happy life is Communion, because in it, they find the source of all energy. (XVIII, 177 - XIV, 126).

197. A young person who frequents Confession and Communion impresses their companions far more than any sermon. (III, 163).

198. Advice for being happy: avoid sin and frequent Holy Communion. (XVI, 26).

199. To distance oneself from Communion is to give room to the insinuations of the devil. (VIII, 116).

200. Communion is a source of energy that should help you throughout your entire life. (XII, 610).

201. Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is and must be your only and true friend. (XI, 522).

202. Let us remember that Jesus is present in the Most Holy Sacrament and is rich in graces to distribute to those who implore them. (The Well-Instructed Youth, 136).

203. Regarding First Communion: before vice takes hold of a young person, let it be the Lord who takes possession of their heart. (IV, 386).

204. The greatest treasure that can be found in heaven and on earth is in the Tabernacle, for there dwells the Master of all creation. (VI, 320).

205. Do you want the devil to assault you? Visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament rarely. Do you want him to flee from you? Visit Jesus frequently. (II, 259).

206. Do you want the Lord to grant you many graces? Visit Him often. Do you not care if He grants you few? Visit Him rarely. (II, 259).

207. Everyone has need of Communion: the good, to remain virtuous; the bad, to amend their ways. (XII, 567).
