On June 24, the Spanish Bishops' Conference appointed economist Luis
Ayala Cañón as the new president of Caritas Spain, the Church's largest
charitable organization.
He previously served on the Spanish
Government's Advisory Council for Health and Social Services, reports
InfoVaticana.com. He was appointed by Socialist Prime Minister Pedro
Sánchez's administration in 2019.
Ayala has also collaborated
with left-leaning organizations, including Fundación Alternativas, a
think tank widely associated with the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party
(PSOE).
Spain's Socialist government under Sánchez enacted
anti-Catholic policies, including legalizing euthanasia, expanding
abortion, and advancing gender and homosex legislation.
In its
announcement, the Spanish Bishops' Conference made no reference to
Ayala's previous government role or political collaborations,
highlighting only his academic credentials and expertise in economics
and social policy.
