The French film Tombé du ciel, due in cinemas on August 12, follows Ilyes, a young Muslim from Roubaix who ends up at a Catholic boarding school in Burgundy, where his unfamiliarity with Catholic beliefs and practices becomes a recurring source of blasphemies about the faith. In one sequence, Ilyes, unable to have breakfast, casually eats unconsecrated hosts from a packet intended for Sunday Mass.
“He is eating the whole Body of Christ!” another character exclaims, referring to the Catholic belief in the Eucharist. Ilyes responds by joking that people should not say he has “eaten people.” He is then ordered to go immediately to confession, which becomes another “joke” when he mistakes the confessional for a cupboard.
