Sin embargo, él no hace alarde en público: extrema confidencialidad y prudencia caracterizan su trabajo (siempre que se puede).

1Las visiones
El Padre Pío está rodeado de visiones. Se definen como «percepciones sobrenaturales de un objeto naturalmente invisible al ser humano«.
En Padre Pío las visiones son de una triple tipología: corporal o sensible, imaginativa, intelectual.
Sensible
Las visiones corporales o sensibles, también llamadas apariciones, son aquellas en las que el sentido de la vista percibe una realidad objetiva (no necesariamente un cuerpo humano, sino también una forma externa sensible o luminosa) naturalmente invisible para el hombre.
Se pueden producir de dos maneras: ya sea por la verdadera presencia de un cuerpo o por una acción inmediata ejercida por un agente externo sobre el órgano de la vista.
Imaginaria
La visión imaginaria es una representación sensible enteramente limitada a la imaginación y que se presenta de manera sobrenatural al espíritu con una vivacidad y claridad superiores a las propias realidades físicas externas.
Se puede producir de tres maneras: a través de la representación de las imágenes recibidas de los sentidos; a través de la combinación sobrenatural de estas especies adquiridas y preservadas en la imaginación; por medio de nuevas imágenes infundidas.
Intelectual
Las visiones intelectuales son conocimientos sobrenaturales que se producen a través de una simple visión de la inteligencia sin impresión ni imagen sensible.

3Toque místico
Siguiendo el orden cronológico del Epistolario está claro que el otro fenómeno extraordinario del que se enriquece el Padre Pío es el llamado toque místico.
En Padre Pío el toque místico es de tres naturalezas: fusión de corazones, beso de amor y toque sustancial.
Son sentimientos deliciosos impresos por Dios, a través del contacto espiritual, «en las profundidades o punta del alma», en la «cima del espíritu».
«Sustanciales»
Se distinguen por el mayor o menor grado de intensidad, y los más profundos se llaman «sustanciales», porque parece que ocurren entre las dos sustancias, Dios y el alma, pero en realidad Dios actúa en las potencias y no en la sustancia del alma.
En la carta que escribió el 18 de abril de 1912 al padre Agostino, revela cómo vive sus días en Pietrelcina, entre miedos y deleites, entre las luchas incesantes que les mueven los demonios y los consuelos que recibe de Jesús.
4Bilocación
Es ese fenómeno místico que hace que el hombre esté presente al mismo tiempo en dos lugares diferentes, sin hacer ningún tipo de movimiento.
Numerosos episodios de bilocación se han encontrado en la vida de los santos (Francisco de Asís, Antonio de Padua, Francisco Javier, Pablo de la Cruz, Alfonso de Liguori). Sigue siendo uno de los fenómenos más difíciles de explicar de manera satisfactoria.
El caso de Raffaelina
Muchas personas, dignas de fe, fueron testigos de los casos de bilocación que acompañaban al santo de Pietrelcina en sus viajes para consolar a las personas que necesitaban su presencia. Nunca eludió la misión que Dios le había confiado.
El 25 de octubre, escribió a su discípula de Foggia, Raffaelina Cerase, revelando que días antes había ido a visitarla en espíritu.
El 10 de diciembre de 1914, sin embargo, también visitó a su hermana Giovina Cerase sin que ella se diera cuenta.
5Transverberación
La transverberación, según la teología mística, es «un fenómeno místico particular que consiste en una herida producida en el alma con una llaga hecha al costado o al corazón o en ambos. El elemento formal y determinante del fenómeno es el amor de Dios y produce en el sujeto alegría, causada por la dulzura del amor divino, y dolor, debido al sitio amoris, que nos hace desear más amor y experimentar no la posesión plena«.
En el origen del fenómeno místico de la transverberación está la herida de Cristo crucificado.

En el Padre Pío ocurrió este fenómeno de transverberación, según el relato que da el padre Benedicto en la carta del 21 de agosto de 1918, el 6 de agosto de 1918.
Según su descripción precisa de lo sucedido, se aprecia la presencia de un personaje celeste, mientras confiesa a los muchachos del seminario.
Tenía en la mano una especie de herramienta, similar a una lámina de hierro muy larga con una punta bien afilada, de la que parecía salir fuego.
El misterioso personaje arrojó con toda su violencia la punta afilada en el alma del fraile. El atroz martirio duró hasta la mañana del día siguiente.
6Estigmatización
Es el fenómeno místico que dio a conocer al Padre Pío y lo llevó al foco de la crónica del tiempo y a la popularidad.
Por otro lado, también era el don místico más incómodo, a la luz de las disposiciones eclesiásticas y el sufrimiento que le causaban la humillación y los prejuicios.
La esfera personal del Padre Pío
Hasta antes de la estigmatización visible, nadie podía saber del Padre Pío de Pietrelcina, y todo lo místico que ocurría en él estaba protegido por la mano de Dios y del secreto ministerial de sus superiores espirituales.
Todo quedaba relegado a la esfera personal del fraile capuchino y sólo las cartas constituían un destello a través del cual apenas se podía vislumbrar una pequeña parte de lo que Dios estaba obrando en él.
En público con los estigmas
Pero cuando viene visiblemente marcados por los estigmas, el misterio se hace de conocimiento público y muchos de los que se enteran del Padre Pío intentan contactarlo, o al menos verlo.
Desde el 20 de septiembre de 1918, hasta su muerte, el 23 de septiembre de 1968, ya no pudo ocultar esos signos y se vio obligado a presentarse siempre como una persona estigmatizada en todas sus funciones, ministeriales y de otro tipo: desde la misa hasta las confesiones, desde la dirección espiritual hasta cualquier otro momento comunitario de oración o recreación.
7Xenoglosia
Es ese fenómeno espiritual místico a través del cual se da a conocer las lenguas desconocidas y a hablarlas también, sin que estas hayan sido estudiadas nunca por quienes poseen este fenómeno.
El Padre Pío no conocía otros idiomas que el italiano y el latín, que es el idioma oficial de la Iglesia, pero escribe dos cartas desde Pietrelcina: una en francés y otra en griego.

1. Visions
Padre Pio was surrounded by visions. They are defined as "supernatural perceptions of an object naturally invisible to the human being."
In Padre Pio, the visions fell into three categories: corporal (sensible), imaginative, and intellectual.
Sensible: Corporal or sensible visions, also called apparitions, are those in which the sense of sight perceives an objective reality (not necessarily a human body, but also a sensible or luminous external form) that is naturally invisible to man. They can occur in two ways: either through the actual presence of a body or through an immediate action exerted by an external agent on the visual organ.
Imaginative: The imaginative vision is a sensible representation entirely confined to the imagination that presents itself supernaturally to the spirit with a vividness and clarity superior to external physical realities themselves. It can occur in three ways: through the representation of images received from the senses; through the supernatural combination of these acquired species stored in the imagination; or by means of new infused images.
Intellectual: Intellectual visions are supernatural insights that occur through a simple perception of the intellect without any sensory impression or image.

3. Mystical Touch
Following the chronological order of his Epistolario (Letters), it is clear that another extraordinary phenomenon enriching Padre Pio's life was the so-called mystical touch.
In Padre Pio, the mystical touch was of three natures: fusion of hearts, kiss of love, and substantial touch. They are delightful feelings imprinted by God through spiritual contact "in the depths or tip of the soul," at the "summit of the spirit."
"Substantial": They are distinguished by their greater or lesser degree of intensity, and the deepest are called "substantial" because they seem to occur between the two substances—God and the soul—though in reality, God acts upon the faculties rather than the substance of the soul.
In the letter he wrote on April 18, 1912, to Father Agostino, he reveals how he lived his days in Pietrelcina among fears and delights, between the incessant struggles stirred up by demons and the consolations he received from Jesus.
4. Bilocation
This is the mystical phenomenon that allows a person to be present in two different places at the same time without making any physical movement.
Numerous episodes of bilocation have been recorded in the lives of saints (Francis of Assisi, Anthony of Padua, Francis Xavier, Paul of the Cross, Alphonsus Liguori). It remains one of the most difficult phenomena to explain satisfactorily.
The Case of Raffaelina: Many trustworthy people witnessed cases of bilocation that accompanied the saint of Pietrelcina on his journeys to comfort those in need of his presence. He never shirked the mission God had entrusted to him. On October 25, he wrote to his disciple in Foggia, Raffaelina Cerase, revealing that days earlier he had visited her in spirit. On December 10, 1914, he also visited her sister, Giovina Cerase, without her realizing it.
5. Transverberation
Transverberation, according to mystical theology, is "a particular mystical phenomenon consisting of a wound produced in the soul alongside a wound made in the side, the heart, or both. The formal and determining element of the phenomenon is the love of God, producing in the subject joy—caused by the sweetness of divine love—and pain, due to the sitio amoris (thirst of love), which makes us desire more love and experience a lack of full possession."
At the origin of the mystical phenomenon of transverberation is the wound of the crucified Christ.
August 6, 1918: In Padre Pio, this phenomenon of transverberation occurred on August 6, 1918, according to the account given by Father Benedetto in his letter dated August 21, 1918. According to his precise description of the event, a celestial figure appeared while Padre Pio was hearing the confessions of the seminary boys. 6. Stigmatization
This is the mystical phenomenon that brought Padre Pio into the public eye, propelling him into news headlines and widespread popularity. On the other hand, it was also his most uncomfortable mystical gift in light of ecclesiastical directives and the suffering caused by humiliation and prejudice.
Padre Pio's Personal Sphere: Prior to the visible stigmatization, no one knew about Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, and everything mystical occurring within him was protected by the hand of God and the seal of ministerial secrecy kept by his spiritual superiors. Everything remained restricted to the friar's personal sphere, and his letters were the only glimpse through which one could barely discern a fraction of what God was working within him.
In Public with the Stigmata: But when he became visibly marked by the stigmata, the mystery became public knowledge, and many who learned of Padre Pio attempted to contact him or at least catch a glimpse of him. From September 20, 1918, until his death on September 23, 1968, he could no longer hide those signs and was forced to present himself as a stigmatized person in all his functions, both ministerial and otherwise: from Mass to confessions, and from spiritual direction to any other communal moment of prayer or recreation.
7. Xenoglossy
Xenoglossy is the mystical spiritual phenomenon through which unknown languages become known and spoken without ever having been studied by the person experiencing it.
Padre Pio knew no languages other than Italian and Latin (the official language of the Church), yet he wrote two letters from Pietrelcina: one in French and another in Greek.
