The Marian shrine of Fátima, Portugal, does not plan to remove or cover its massive Rupnik mosaic. Last year, the Fátima shrine issued a statement saying that it would not remove the mosaic.
The Substack.com-Account The Pillar (September 18) contacted the Fátima shrine again after Rupnik’s mosaics at Lourdes were covered and “was told there is no update to the shrine’s stance.”
There is the prospect of a papal visit to Fátima next year.
Rupnik is facing a canonical trial at the Vatican over credible accusations that he sexually, spiritually, and psychologically abused numerous women. His art, with its big black eyes and characteristic asymmetry, mirrors a warped mind.
Bishop Virgílio Antunes, president of the Portuguese bishops’ conference and chairman of the National Council of the Fátima Shrine, acknowledged that “one cannot separate the artwork from the context and the circumstances in which it was created.” BUT: Neither he nor the bishops’ conference “believe that, at this moment, there are reasons to propose any change to the position already taken by the shrine” - that is, keeping the mosaic in place.
